Teaching RE in the primary school

Religious education (RE) makes a significant contribution to pupils’ academic and personal development. It also plays a key role in promoting social cohesion and the virtues of respect and empathy, which are important in our diverse society *.

* Religious education: realising the potential (Ofsted publication)

This course features three whole staff sessions to support the continued professional development of teachers and support staff in the teaching of RE in the primary school. Delivered face to face in your school by an experienced consultant, teacher and RE lead in a Church of England primary school, we recommend allowing one and a half hours per session.

The course will cover:

What makes for effective RE in the primary classroom?

  • Understanding the core purpose of RE
  • What does the Church of England statement of entitlement require of church schools?
  • SIAMS framework 2023: inspection questions 6 & 7
  • What constitutes a balanced RE curriculum?
  • Understanding the aims and pedagogy behind the LDBS agreed syllabus that leads to effective teaching and learning of RE

Teachers will leave with:

  • Knowledge of the core purpose of RE
  • What the Church of England statement of entitlement requires of church schools.
  • An understanding of the SIAMS framework inspection questions related to RE.
  • The three disciplines of RE
  • How an enquiry-approach to the teaching of RE leads to effective learning and high outcomes for all children.

What is the big story of the Bible?

  • Core concepts that underpin an understanding of the overarching narrative of the Bible as seen through the lens of the Christian community of believers

Teachers will leave with:

  • An overview of the Bible
  • An understanding of the core concepts and how they are connected and interconnected with each other

Creative approaches to teaching RE

  • The importance of teaching religious vocabulary so that children can use and apply it accurately
  • Strategies to support collaborative, creative learning
  • NOTE: this session will use examples from across the major world faiths

Teachers will leave with:

  • A bank of resources and strategies they can use to enhance their teaching of RE and bring the subject alive for children

The cost is 1/2 a day of your School Improvement package, making this is an excellent way to provide all staff with high quality on-going RE CPD. This can be purchased either as a 3-session package, or a single twilight session. For schools that have not opted into a School Improvement package, the cost is £440 for the entire course per school, or £149 per individual session per school.
